Road Trips In BC

Paul at CupidClick Dating has explored most of the smaller highways across southern British Columbia in the past several years. We’re going to talk about some of the more fun and scenic drives he’s come across.

  1. Slocan Valley – Depending on where you’re driving from, this could end up being a long trip especially if you do it in a single day. From western BC, you’ll want to east on Highway 3 until you reach Castlegar. Just north of Castlegar is the turn which takes up up Highway 6 passing through Slocan, Silverton and New Denver. Highway 31A out of New Denver will connect you to Kaslo and Highway 31 south along Kootenay Lake toward Nelson. From there you can connect back up with Castlegar or head south toward Salmo and Trail. Much of this drive involves winding mountain roads with nice scenery. You can also make a stop at the Sandon ghost town which happens to be seen in the cover photo for this article.
  2. Highway 23 “Big Bend” – Highway 23 north of Revelstoke will take you along Lake Revelstoke and the Columbia River until the highway ends at the Mica Dam. There’s a number of camping areas along the way, and the highway isn’t very busy as it doesn’t connect anywhere.
  3. Highway 8 Nicola – This highway runs between Merritt and Spences Bridge. It isn’t necessarily a long drive, but it is fairly enjoyable with the right vehicle. Similar highways in the area include Highway 12 north to Lillooet and Highway 99 connecting back to Highway 97 near Cache Creek.
  4. Old Hope-Princeton Route – This is Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton passing through Manning Park. You’ll still encounter traffic on this route but the drive is fun.
  5. Coalmont Rd – This route leaves Princeton and heads north-west through Coalmont and Tulameen. A fairly fun drive and also offers good scenery along the way. The road does continue north out of Tulameen to connect to Highway 5A though this would be a long drive.
